Fear. Discomfort. Doubt.
Those feelings are often labeled as negative because they are uncomfortable. They are "itchy" and we want to jump out of them as quickly as we can.
We often use unskilled strategies to scratch the itch - we run away, we fight with others, we try to escape by drinking or shopping or eating. We notice that we lessen the itch for a short period of time - but it comes back with a vengeance.
But what would happen if we used a more skilled strategy? What if we turned to face the uncomfortable emotions, without judgment? Then they could become our teachers by inviting us to take the time to dig down, to their roots, to look with curiosity at their cause. And once we could see the truth of their cause, we could make informed decisions about behaviors that either support or don't support our basic needs.
Whoa! Once we do that, the itchiness subsides!
